A Quick Guide to Declining a Job Offer (With Examples)

June 28, 2021 -

After submitting a killer resume and cover letter and crushing your interview, you finally receive a job offer. However, after much consideration, you decide to decline it.

Maybe you got a better offer, or the salary wasn’t up to par. Or perhaps it was something as serious as you didn’t get a good vibe from the interviewer’s answers to your covid questions. You don’t want to burn any bridges, but for whatever your reason might be, the offer just wasn’t what you expected.

When rejecting the offer, you can either phone or send an email. But always be sure to respond in a timely manner and be positive. Express your appreciation for the offer and give a brief reason for your rejection. Close on a good note with an open-ended statement. This statement should show your interest in future opportunities and be a call to keep in touch.

Template 1: General Email Response

It was a pleasure to meet you and learn about the company. I would love to stay in touch should there be another opening in the future.

Template 2: Need a higher salary

Dear [Interviewer]

Thank you for meeting with me last week to review the position and introduce me to the team. After reviewing the benefits and compensation package, I must decline. Unfortunately, the salary does not fit with my current situation.

You have a remarkable team, and I enjoyed meeting all of them. I hope we can keep in touch and hopefully find the opportunity to one day work together.

Sincerely,

Template 3: Declining after already accepting the offer

Dear [interviewer],

I was very excited to accept your offer for the [position]. Its been a dream of mine to work for [company name]. I had a wonderful time meeting you and the rest of the team last week.

After some contemplation, I have to decline the offer. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Know this was a tough decision. However, the position does not currently fit with my career goals. I wish you all the best in finding the perfect candidate.

Once again, thank you for your time and consideration. If possible, I would love to stay connected through LinkedIn.

Template 4: Not a good fit for the role

Dear [Interviewer],

Many thanks for the job offer for the [position]. Sadly, I will have to decline your offer. After careful consideration and re-evaluating my career goals, I have accepted a position elsewhere that is more in line with my goals.

I appreciate the time and consideration you gave my application. I love the mission of the company and think you are all doing a phenomenal job. I wish everyone great success in all endeavours.
