Looking for a New Job? Now is the Perfect Time

November 21, 2021 -

It’s probably common knowledge by now that the pandemic turned the Canadian economy upside down and on its head. By 2020 unemployment had reached an alarming 1.89 million. From job cuts, downsizing to changes in management, life has not been easy for many professionals throughout Canada.

We have all had a lot of time to reflect on what’s important to us, maybe a little too much time. Do you value your work? Do your goals align with your current company? Are you feeling overworked, or do you think your talents could be better utilized? Do you see yourself growing with the company? Does the company offer programs for career advancement? If you feel dissatisfied with your answers to these questions, it might be time to step back and change careers.

54% of Canadians state they care about the following:

Proper compensation

  • Work-life balance
  • Company culture
  • Career advancement

The job market is hot with opportunities making it the perfect time to search for a new job. As 2021 winds down and businesses are rehiring, there is an alarming decrease in applications. Understandably, many people are worried about financial stability, layoffs, market changes, or just not feeling equipped to change careers.

Why is now the perfect time to switch jobs?

Companies now more than ever are getting creative in their employee retention and attraction strategies. This labour shortage has been a real wake-up call for employers. More Canadians are putting their foot down, demanding more than just a simple paycheck. And it seems that businesses are beginning to listen.

On-the-job training

If you are concerned about lack of experience, fear not! Many businesses are investing in their employees by offering on-the-job training. This will give you the technical skills and knowledge you need all while still working. Many industries are experiencing much less demand, causing employers to be more willing to build the required skills with new hires.

Focus on soft-skills

Similar to the above point, employers are shifting their focus from technical skills (within reason) to assessing candidates’ transferable skills. These include but are not limited to communication, organization, leadership and team building. So even if you have little to no practical experience, you most likely already have many of these soft skills.

Flexibility

Although we are beginning to recover, the pandemic isn’t over. Many employees still don’t want to make a total return to the workplace or a return at all. 77% of Canadians say that flexibility in work location and hours impacts their decision to stay at their jobs.

To address this issue, employers are offering hybrid work options allowing employees to work remotely part-time. If you are someone seeking out a better work-life balance, the hybrid option might be of benefit.
