What is it like job searching in 2017? Indications show that job growth is increasing, and it may end on a stronger note than last year. But according to the Society of Human Resource Managers (SHRM) there is an increasing difficulty in recruiting for businesses. So, what does that mean for you? There are far fewer job seekers available when applying for specific industry positions that need to be filled. SHRM’s latest report, Leading Indicators of National Employment (LINE) found that HR recruiting difficulty jumped 3.9 index points. And there is apprehension that this trend will continue to rise in the next two quarters.
However, the data doesn’t correlate to national employment statistics. According to Statistics Canada, unemployment levels are the lowest they’ve been in the last 2 years, with a low of 6.6%. Even with the unemployment rate at an all-time low the job market is still highly competitive – especially for positions that are more desirable. So, how do you display your competitive edge? At Live Assets, we put together our best guidance and advice for any job hunter or seeker looking to stand out from the crowd.
Based on research and insights, here are our top 7 things you should do to get hired:
Don’t always follow your passion.
This piece of advice may seem counterintuitive to what everyone hears these days. But research has shown, that people who end up really enjoying their work, started without having much passion for their job. Alternatively, as they got better at their work and gained more control over their career, their passion developed and grew for their job. We don’t recommend ignoring your passion, but leave room and be open to new challenges.
Get personal with personnel
As the above suggests, building strategic relationships with personnel at your company of choice can make all the difference. If you find unimpressionable online applications aren’t working, try to become personable with gatekeepers and administrative assistants to close the social barrier between you and the manager. They have knowledge about their schedule, interests, responsibilities and preferences. Being friendly and engaging in a professional relationship can make all the difference.
Be proactive
Don’t wait around thinking your “dream job” will come to you… because it won’t. Take initiative! Study the industry, field, and company you’re interested in. Use public information or resources to better understand the challenges. With the latter, you can create a potential and creative solution for them. You can share this information with them directly or publicly, like on a blog. This will help you get noticed for your innovation and critical thinking ability – and to go above without expectations.
Network
One of the most important parts of job searching is getting your name out there. You never know who might be a great recourse or even become a great friend. Make sure to attend relevant professional events, join industry organizations or associations; reach out to former employers or volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to gain experience and meet new people. Expanding your network is valuable to keep up-to-date on industry trends, new innovations, and potential job openings.
Don’t apply right away
It may sound counterintuitive, but don’t apply to every online post you see – there is nothing worse than applying for job after job and not getting a response back. If you find a job that interests you, do your research. Find out more about the company and the professionals working there. Reach out to the company, let them know you admire what they do, and are interested in hearing more information. Call or email them questions regarding their job; what they like, what they find challenging, and any advice for a person interested in applying. This is a great way of keeping your application from getting lost or forgotten online.
Focus on finding a job you can grow in
We understand most entry-level jobs are not the most desirable, but everyone starts somewhere. Instead, ask the right questions to assess what opportunities or growth the job has (in the next five years.) Concentrate less on the day-to-day routine, but more on where you will have the best opportunity to add value to the company. If you’ll have the ability to network with people in your industry and expand your role in a company that has a preference to hire internally.
Become a brand ambassador
The best thing you can do for a company you admire is become their biggest fan. Being a brand ambassador is a great way to becoming an employee. However, make sure you’re authentic. Ensure your communication is consistent and regular on all platforms. When it comes down to it, companies want employees who love their company and are enthusiastic about their job. Brand ambassadors or loyal fans are passionate consumers and often make great employees.
