How to Become a Full Stack Web Developer

October 31, 2021 -

When it comes to careers concerning the W3 or the World Wide Web, it was thought you are either a web designer or a web developer but never both. But as the internet and technology advance, there are now countless job titles. From visual designers, project managers to front-end and back-end developers, the list goes on and on. But, what if we told you that there’s a position that combines all those jobs and more? If you have a knack for all things web, you might want to consider a career as a full-stack developer.

What is a full-stack web developer?

A full-stack developer is someone who is highly skilled both in front-end web design and back-end developing (coding). A successful full-stack developer can design, code and maintain a fully operating website all on their own.

Although the web designer/developer roles can still be two distinct positions, when the two work together, problems can arise; a full stack developer can avoid these problems as they are working solo. Another benefit of a full-stack developer is the freedom it can bring. If you are self-motivating, a full-stack developer can start their own design and development business. You can build and monetize websites alongside your regular 9 to 5 job.

How to become a web developer

Now that we have an understanding of what the job entails, how do we get started? Full-stack developers require in-depth knowledge of computer programming in languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScrip, Python and many others. There should also be some knowledge of web design, security and best user practices.

Whether you want to change careers or are starting to search through those post-secondary program catalogues, let’s talk education. Not all full-stack developers need formal education if you have the experience and skill to back you up. However, if you do a quick search on Indeed, you will find that many companies do ask for a Bachelors in Computer Science or other equivalent degrees.

Which are the best Computer Science programs in Canada?

According to Macleans, these 5 universities offer the best computer science programs:

  • University of British Columbia
  • University of Toronto
  • University of McGill
  • University of Alberta

Many other universities and colleges also offer certificate programs that can be done alone or in addition to a Bachelor of Science. These programs are more specific to the tasks of a full stack developer:

York University: Offers a certificate in Full Stack Development. The program is 11 months long and covers HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, jQuery, Bootstrap, Node.js, MySQL, MongoDB and a ton more.

Lambton College: Offers a Full Stack Software Development Graduate Certificate. The program is two years and offers a co-op option.

Conestoga: Offers a two-year Web Development Graduate Certificate. This program focuses on back-end and front-end programming to give students the tools to implement and maintain interactive websites.

If you think this could be the career for you, but you want to get further information, book a meeting with a recruitment consultant.
