7 Benefits of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT West Extension

1.   Increased Connectivity

The extension will run along a 9.2-kilometer corridor, starting from the future Mount Dennis station and ending at Renforth Drive. This seamless link will facilitate easy transfers between subway lines, GO Transit, and other surface routes. The Greater Toronto Airports Authority has also been discussing extending the line to Pearson Airport. By providing a faster and more reliable mode of transportation, the LRT will significantly reduce travel times and improve accessibility to key neighbourhoods, commercial districts, and educational institutions.

2. Reduced Traffic Congestion

As one of Canada’s largest cities, Toronto faces its fair share of traffic congestion. The Eglinton Crosstown LRT aims to alleviate this problem by offering an attractive alternative to driving. 37,500 more people will be in walking distance to transit. By encouraging more people to opt for public transit, the project will reduce traffic congestion, resulting in shorter commute times for both drivers and public transit users.

3.   Environmentally Friendly

With growing concerns about climate change and environmental sustainability, the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is a welcome eco-friendly solution. Unlike traditional diesel buses or cars, LRT systems are powered by electricity, making them a greener transportation option. With this extension, there will be up to 6.5 million fewer car trips on the road, and the city will witness a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by up to 5,800 tonnes, positively impacting air quality.

4.   Economic Boost and Job Creation

The project’s construction phase has already generated significant employment opportunities for the local workforce. Furthermore, improved transportation infrastructure can attract businesses to the areas along the LRT route, fostering economic development and increasing property values. This extension provides improved access to 23,600 more jobs within walking distance of transit. With 4,800 low-income residents within walking distance of transit, these citizens will have increased access to job opportunities.

5.   Enhanced Rider Experience

The Eglinton Crosstown LRT is designed with the comfort and convenience of passengers in mind. Low-floor LRT vehicles will provide easy boarding for people of all ages and abilities, including those with mobility challenges. With spacious interiors, Wi-Fi connectivity, and modern amenities, the LRT aims to offer a pleasant and efficient rider experience, encouraging more people to choose public transit over private vehicles.

6.   Sustainable Urban Development

The extension’s development has sparked urban renewal and transit-oriented development along its route. This type of development encourages mixed-use spaces, with residential, commercial, and recreational facilities located near transit hubs. By promoting transit-oriented development, the West extension encourages sustainable urban growth and supports low-income communities.

7.   Improved Safety

The Eglinton Crosstown LRT is designed with safety in mind. Separation from road traffic and designated right-of-way for the LRT vehicles minimize the risk of accidents and collisions. Additionally, security personnel and surveillance systems at LRT stations enhance passenger safety, making public transit a secure and reliable mode of travel.

The Eglinton Crosstown LRT project promises to be a game-changer for Toronto. With enhanced connectivity, reduced traffic congestion, environmental benefits, and economic growth, the LRT is poised to improve the quality of life for Torontonians. By embracing sustainable urban development and providing a modern, efficient, and safe transit system, the Eglinton Crosstown LRT sets a precedent for future public transportation initiatives in the city. As the LRT becomes fully operational, Toronto is on its way to becoming a model for sustainable urban mobility in North America.
