The pandemic caused a lot of businesses to shift to remote work. Many employees had to scramble to make this temporary arrangement work. After over a year of Covid-19, we’ve come to learn this arrangement might not be so temporary after all. Many businesses are opting for a happy medium between remote and in-person work, otherwise known as a hybrid work style. A hybrid work arrangement has many benefits, but it can take some time to get used to.
Here are five tips to help ease your transition into a hybrid work arrangement.
Invest in your office space
Now that you have decided to adopt a hybrid work arrangement permanently, it’s time to create a space dedicated to work. And the kitchen table isn’t going to cut it anymore. It’s essential to have a space that will be functional and allow for maximum productivity. Discuss with your company what equipment is needed and if there are allowances to purchase any necessary supplies.
Have clear expectations:
The beauty of a hybrid work arrangement is flexibility. However, you also can’t randomly decide when you want to come into the office and when you don’t. There still needs to be scheduled times when you will be in the office and when you will log on remotely. This schedule could look different for everyone. You might work in-office a few days a week or maybe work remotely three weeks out of the month with one week in the office. There are endless combinations of how you should balance your time at home and in the office. Be clear about your expected work schedule and work with your company if you find the current arrangement isn’t going to plan.
Communication/one-on-one chats with manager:
Managers and supervisors are an integral part of employee wellbeing. With this new change might come stress and feelings of anxiety. Whether bi-weekly or once a month, book time to speak one-on-one with your manager. Use these calls to discuss any of your concerns or goals you are struggling to achieve. Keeping an open line of communication with your manager will help you stay proactive and prevent any future problems.
Keeping accountable
One of the downsides of working from home, whether hybrid or full-time, is there isn’t always anyone to keep you accountable. If your company has a weekly reporting system, use it! However, for daily work tasks, it can be easy to get behind. Different organizational systems work differently for everyone. Whether you keep a digital calendar or make handwritten to-do notes create daily goals. Keep in mind how your daily goals will align with the overall success of the company.
Maintain your routine
Working from home can feel like a vacation. You don’t have to wake up early to commute, no prepping lunches, you don’t even have to change out of your PJs if you don’t need to.
It can be challenging to get into your work headspace while at home. Maintaining a routine will help minimize any disruptions for those days you have to get up early and commute to the office. Getting up at a regular time and dressing in your work attire can help shift you from home to work mode. The goal is to create a seamless transition from home to office.
