Live Assets | IT Staffing Solutions is looking for a Commercial Manager for one of our clients who is a Construction and Infrastructure leader in Canada, to support a dynamic, transit project in the Greater Toronto Area, from bid to execution phase.


Responsibilities

The Commercial Manager will have a minimum of 10 years’ experience working for a Contractor on large projects in a lump sum or unit rate environment. Under the direction of the Commercial Director, Project Manager or Project Director, the Commercial Manager will provide highly specialized knowledge in overseeing the commercial strategy on a project. The individual will work closely with the senior operations team on the project to develop and implement a commercial management system that drives performance and minimizes risk to the business.

 

  • Change management, including schedule interpretation and claims administration.
  • Implementing an effective system to ensure timely delivery of all contractually-required notices to the client.
  • Administer project contracts, ensuring contract deliverables and timelines are met and minimizing commercial risk.
  • Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of various contracts with clients and subcontractors.
  • Develop and monitor procurement scheduling and plans, including facilitating competitive tendering processes.
  • Provide regular reporting and analytics on commercial issues to executives and project managers.
  • Engage with insurance advisors and legal advisors as necessary for project insurance and legal advice.
  • Develop risk management and mitigation plans, analyzing potential events that may affect project objectives.
  • Manage project closeout, including defect liability period and operations and maintenance.
  • Lead and align a team of commercial direct reports, holding individuals accountable for results.
  • Depending on project phase and structure, oversee project controls functions (schedule/cost/risk/document control).
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of finance, accounting, and project reporting.
  • Liaise and coordinate with various internal and external stakeholders.

 

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of commercial management experience on major projects, including working in joint ventures with international partners.
  • Legal, Engineering, or Quantity Surveying degree or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience working with a variety of contracts, such as Design Build, Lump Sum, and unit price.
  • Sound understanding of construction methodology and process in a large, complex operating environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of change management principles and contract law.
  • Direct experience with tendering processes, contract administration, budgetary cost value, procurement, and subcontract administration.
  • Proven track record with claims management and dispute resolution on major projects.
  • Experience with risk identification and management.
  • Basic understanding of insurance program requirements for different project types.
  • Experience with integrated ERP systems.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills.
  • Excellent people and leadership skills.
  • Ability to liaise and coordinate with various internal and external stakeholders.
