Connectivity
Connectivity has never been stronger in Toronto, which is good news for IT professionals and IT recruiters alike. WiredScore, the groundbreaking firm behind Wired Certification, has officially launched in the city. The firm helps existing businesses and new investors find the buildings in Toronto with the best infrastructure. For a serious IT recruiter, this is welcome information.
WiredScore rates buildings based on quality and number of Internet Service Providers, the capacity to support new services, availability of fibre and cabling, protection and redundancy of infrastructure, and more.
Aire Barendrecht, WiredScore founder and CEO told Techvibes that he’s excited about local opportunities. “Toronto has one of the most dynamic commercial real estate industries in the world. We are proud to be part of its resurgence by bringing the importance of connectivity to the forefront of the city’s push to strengthen its global presence,” Barendrecht says.
WiredScore’s report quantifies the importance of connectivity. 99 percent of the Toronto workers surveyed said access to reliable internet is critical. Yet, of the Toronto office workers surveyed, 90 percent have experienced connectivity problems at work, while 95 percent say Internet outages or poor connectivity negatively impacts them and their company.
IT Business
Wired Certification will identify whether a given building is already properly connected, which is key to saving IT recruiters, professionals, real estate agents and businesses, time and money. According to IT Business, this was a prevalent theme at WiredScores’ launch event held Oct. 26th 2017.
During the launch, Elizabeth Callahan, Uber’s workplace build manager said “we’re in competition (for talent) with Facebook and Google and the like. Any time there’s an option or a building where those (connectivity) elements are already integrated, it’s hugely beneficial. Adding in that time to implement connectivity? We can’t really afford that.”
Several Toronto buildings have already been given a Wired Certification and top platinum rating, including:
- The TD Centre
- 81 Bay Street
- Scotia Plaza
- One York
- CIBC Square
Opportunities
A few of these platinum certified buildings have been suggested by the City of Toronto as potential sites for the new Amazon HQ2. The rating may help make Amazon’s decision. Either way, it will certainly bring in others and building managers are already seeing the benefits of certification. “It’s a marketing tool and it’s a differentiator,” David Hoffman, the general manager of Toronto’s TD Centre told IT Business. “By getting a whole (property) certified, we’re demonstrating that we’re supporting tenants’ work environments and we’re supporting their business productivity.”
IT Business reports that “Toronto is the fourth largest technology sector market in North America but it’s the fastest growing in terms of tech jobs created,” Barendrecht said at the WiredScore launch. “We believe WiredScore will enhance Toronto’s reputation as a smart place to invest and do business, driving the creation of new jobs and greater opportunities.”
