What You Should Know About a Company Before Your Interview

Connecting with a top employer through Live Assets is a huge opportunity. And, while you certainly have your resume and your answers to typical questions polished, your interviewers will be looking for even more.

As an IT recruiter, we understand that employers aren’t just looking for skill sets. They’re looking for a committed individual who will engage with fellow employees, involve themselves in the company culture, and add value to their specific industry as a whole.

If you want to leave a positive impression in an interview, make sure you conduct some research beforehand to understand your prospective company a little better. Here are five areas you should focus on:

  1. What the Company Does

You may understand your role, but do you understand how you’ll be supporting the company and its corporate vision? To do this you’ll need to read beyond their “About Us” page. Find out the details about what the business does, who it does business with, and how it has changed over time.

  1. The Company Culture

A job description will often give you a glimpse into the company’s culture, it’s usually accompanied by a snippet about who they are in the posting. But review sites like Glassdoor, or the company’s presence on social media, can give you a deeper understanding and more transparency about the company culture. You’ll need to demonstrate you not only understand the values and outlook of the company, but you’ll also be a good fit for their social culture.

  1. Press Releases & Recent Company Achievements

Press about the company will help you understand what kind of results they are achieving, what challenges they’re facing, and what opportunities might be available for you. For example, if the company is expanding into a new market and you’re willing to relocate, mentioning your open to travelling or different areas can make your application stronger.

  1. Industry News

We’re not talking about the general information. Instead, get right down into the specifics of what your prospective company does. If something has been making waves in the industry, chances are your interviewer will ask what you think about it. If it happens to be related to IT, you may even be asked if you have the skills to deal with the issue.

  1. Who Will Be Interviewing You

Putting a face to the name of your interviewer is easy through LinkedIn or other social media channels — it can help you stay calm and focused. An interviewer is a person who is looking to make a good connection with you as well. While the information isn’t always available, knowing the individual interviewing you can give you some specific advantages. For example, understanding your interviewer’s role in the company can help you predict their perspective and concerns, so you’ll be ready to answer their questions.
