Last year the pandemic caused a 180 shift in both professional and personal lives, causing many to adapt to this new world of remote work. Learning new technologies and creating a new work-life balance was stressful. After over a year, it seems people have adjusted. But now we are about to undo some of that.
Many companies are on the road to returning to the office – with some restrictions. And while the idea of getting that one step closer back to pre-Covid life is exciting, there is also a lot of anxiety that comes with it too. In some recent research, Canada Life has reported 46% of Canadians feeling anxious about the virus if they return to the office. Whatever your anxieties may be, the following tips can help you get back in the swing of things.
Start waking up earlier
Without the long commute, many of us have gotten used to that extra hour of sleep in the mornings. It’s time to reset our biological clocks and head to bed a little earlier. Doing this even a week before your return date will get you back into your new routine and in the right mindset.
Prepare the night prior
To avoid the hustle and bustle of the morning rush, get all your things ready to go the night before. Simple things like setting clothes out or packing your lunch the night before ensures everything is readily available. Doing so will put you in control of how your morning will go and reduce some anxieties.
Review safety protocols
While we are starting to integrate back into regular life, some restrictions still need to be implemented. Your company should already have safety protocols and policies to ensure the safety of all staff. If anything goes south, knowing your contingency plan will help you be prepared and stay calm.
Seek out support
Bottling these feelings up will cause you to feel more alone and anxious than you already are. Chances are, you’re not the only one feeling this way. Speaking with loved ones about your apprehensions is a great way to boost your confidence about your return. Remember, your colleagues are probably also experiencing some anxiousness about this whole thing. Reach out to them! Seek out and offer support from your co-workers. They might have some good advice to give. If none of these options ease your mind, there is never shame in seeking out professional support.
Focus on what you can control
In these unprecedented times, it can feel like we have no control. And to a certain extent, we don’t. Your first day back might not go as smoothly as you hope it will. And that’s okay! There is going to be an adjustment period, and you have to give it time. Managing expectations and focusing on what you can control rather than what you can’t will help alleviate this stress.
